SIRANI, Giovanni Andrea
(1610-70), attributed to:
Judith with the Head of Holofernes, after Guido Reni
Etching. The Illustrated Bartsch 1 (314); Gori Gandellini XIV, 192, as a firm attribution; Marcus Sopher (Seventeenth Century Italian Prints, 1978) 75, as very plausible; BertelĂ /Ferrari 929, as possibly Sirani Sopher mentions an early impression or state before horizontal scratches in the drapery. While our impression has a few plate scratches, it does not appear to have the ones referred to. Sopher also illustrates an undescribed anonymous reverse copy of much the same size.
A fine, well-contrasted impression, trimmed approximately on the platemark all round, having the full lower plate margin which is partly trimmed in the Sopher impression. 254 x 172mm.
